Pupils at Kaimes have special needs, including autism. The Wych Elm Project gave them an opportunity to work with one of Scotland’s leading professional artists and craftsman, Chris Holmes in collaboration with Sharon Kirby, a colleague from Gogar Cabinetworks,, to create a unique piece of sculpture that now has pride of place in the school.
The project took place both in the school, forming part of the CDT curriculum, and out at Chris Holmes’ workshop at Gogar, an old church, where pupils also planted some disease-resistant wych elm seedlings.
