About This piece: Necklace

In making her necklace Caroline contrasts commonplace and more valuable materials, adopting traditional casting techniques to inlay precious metal into the grain of the wood, mirroring the wings of the white letter hairstreak butterfly which breeds on the tree. She explains: ‘By contrasting these materials, I hope to express the ecological value of the elm to be surpassing the cost of the materials and the luxury of jewellery as a whole’.
