I have been designing and making furniture for 25 years. I have a degree in furniture design and have taught at both Newcastle and Edinburgh College of Art as well as running my workshop in the Scottish Borders. I work mainly in native hardwoods, using traditional cabinetry skills. I offer a design service, working with the client to achieve the best solution for their individual needs. This can accommodate the most up to date technology, as required.
The chest Chris was commissioned by Fife-born writer Ian Rankin, author of the best-selling Rebus detective novels, and his partner Miranda Harvey. The challenge was to make a large sculptural piece from the relatively modest piece of timber he was allocated. His design solves this by stiffening the thin boards by steam-bending and reinforcing.
